1/72 scale trees
Materials:
DAS modelling clay
Thin wire
Some sponges
Green and Brown paints
1. you have to make tree skeletons from wire: to do this, take
your wire and cut off 3 lengths about 7cm long.
2. Twist these wires into one thick piece using pliers to
hold them tightly into place, but leave 1-2cms' at the bottom.
Spread these to make a stand for the tree. You can also shape these to look like
roots. The frame should be steady and tight
3. Coat the frame with DAS, and leave around 2-3 cm at the top.
4. That's for the trunks for now. The foilage we make from triangular or circular pieces of sponge.
Cut the sponge proportionally to the trunk's size, usually 5-8 cms. Do this
over a trash can and use good big scissors.
5. Now paint your sponges to make them look like foilage. To do this,
take a jar with maybe a cup sized amount of water and pour some green paint
in (note that you don't need very much). Put the lid on and shake well. Wearing
rubber gloves, dunk the sponges in and squeeze them a little so they absorb
the paint. Now you need you play a little so they aren't soaked but still retain enough paint
so that they will have a green color. Do this over a LOT of newspapers.
6. Now to painting the trunks- (we're assuming some time has passed) First coat the trunks with a
dark brown color and drybrush light brown.
7. Some more time has passed and everything is dry. Now just spear the sponge
onto the wire and presto... You have trees that don't look bad and yet are
sturdy enough to fall on the floor and get lugged around.
